What To Do When Life Hurts

Sermon from cong readings in 1 Chron 6-10, Aug 5, 2007 – bk@kluth.org

Our ministry theme this year is Reaching beyond generations & walls

Living examples that life can hurt

1 Chron 6:15 Jehozadak was deported when the LORD sent Judah and Jerusalem into exile by the hand of Nebuchadnezzar.

1 Chron 9:1-2 The people of Judah were taken captive to Babylon because of their unfaithfulness.

1 Chron 7:21-24 Ezer and Elead were killed…Their father Ephraim mourned for them many days, and his relatives came to comfort him. Then he lay with his wife again, and she became pregnant and gave birth to a son. He named him Beriah, because there had been misfortune (=adversity, affliction, bad times, grief, hurt, sorrow, misery) in his family.

1 Chron 8:8-9 Sons were born to Shaharaim in Moab after he had divorced his wives Hushim and Baara.

1 Chron 10:6-7 Saul and his three sons died, and all his house died together.  When all the Israelites in the valley saw that the army had fled and that Saul and his sons had died, they abandoned their towns and fled. And the Philistines came and occupied them.

1 - Learn God’s Word

Ps 119:71, 92 It was good for me to be afflicted so that I might learn your decrees…If your law had not been my delight, I would have perished in my affliction.

2 – Love God and lean on His sovereignty

Rom 8:28 We know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.

Ps 139:16 All the days ordained for me were written in your book

before one of them came to be.

Phil 1:12 I want you to know, brothers, that what has happened to me (imprisonment) has really served to advance the gospel.

3 - Locate and unload any sin in your life

Ps 119:67, 71, 92 Before I was afflicted I went astray, but now I obey your word.

Heb 12:1-2 Let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith.

4 - Leave your burdens with God

Ps 56:8 You have seen me tossing and turning through the night. You have collected all my tears and preserved them in your bottle! You have recorded every one in your book.TLB

1 Peter 5:7 Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.

1 Sam 1:10 Hannah was in distress of soul, praying to the Lord and weeping bitterly.

5 - Live one day at a time

Ps 118:24 This is the day the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.

Matt 6:33-34 Seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

What is God prompting me to do in response to this message?
