God Is Greater Than It All

Sermon from cong readings in Isaiah, Dec 16, 2007 – bk@kluth.org

1 - God is greater than nations and rulers

Isa 40:15 Surely the nations are like a drop in a bucket; they are regarded as dust on the scales.

Isa 40:23-24 He brings princes to naught and reduces the rulers of this world to nothing. No sooner are they planted, no sooner are they sown, no sooner do they take root in the ground, than he blows on them and they wither, and a whirlwind sweeps them away like chaff.

Matt 24:14 This gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.

2 - God is greater than your weariness or weaknesses

Isa 40:29-31 He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.  Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength.  They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.

Matt 11:28 (Jesus said) "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”

Phil 4:13 I can do everything through him who gives me strength.

3 - God is greater than your fears & troubles

Isa 41:10-11, 13 Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.  "All who rage against you

will surely be ashamed and disgraced; those who oppose you will be as nothing and perish…For I am the LORD, your God, who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you.

Isa 43:1-3 "Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine.  When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you.  When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.  For I am the LORD, your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior.

John 16:33 (Jesus said) “In me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."

4 - God is greater than your past

Isa 43:18-19 Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing!  Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?

I am making a way in the desert and streams in the wasteland.

Phil 3:13-14 One thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

5 - God is greater than your sin

Isa 43:25 (God says) “I, even I, am he who blots out your transgressions, for my own sake, and remembers your sins no more.”

Heb 9:15 Christ died to set them free from the penalty of the sins they had committed.

Heb 9:26 (Christ came) to remove the power of sin forever by his sacrificial death for us.

Heb 9:28 Christ died only once as a sacrifice to take away the sins of many people. He will come again but not to deal with our sins again. This time he will bring salvation to all those who are eagerly waiting for him.
