Good News for
You & the Whole World
From congregational readings in Isaiah 51-57 Dec 23,
2007 – bk@kluth.org
John
3:16-18 For
God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes
in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
John
10:10 (Jesus
said) I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more
abundantly.
1) You can come to the CHRIST of Christmas if you need
comfort
Isa
51:7-8 Listen to me, you who
know right from wrong and cherish my law in your hearts. Do not be afraid of
people's scorn or their slanderous talk. For the moth will
destroy them as it destroys clothing. The worm will eat away at them as
it eats wool. But my righteousness will last forever. My salvation will
continue from generation to generation.
Isa
57:1-2 The
righteous pass away; the godly often die before their time. And no one seems to
care or wonder why. No one seems to understand that God is protecting them from
the evil to come. For the godly who die will rest in peace.
2) You can come to the CHRIST of Christmas if you are
spiritually thirsty or bankrupt
Isa
55:1-4 "Is
anyone thirsty? Come and drink--even if you have no money! Come, take your
choice of wine or milk--it's all free! Why spend your money on food that does
not give you strength? Why pay for food that does you no good? Listen, and I will tell you where to get food that is good
for the soul! "Come to me with your
ears wide open. Listen, for the life of your soul is at stake. I am ready to
make an everlasting covenant with you. I will give you all the mercies and
unfailing love that I promised to David.
Isa
57:18 [The LORD says] “I have seen his (sinful/greedy)
ways, but I will heal him; I will guide him and restore comfort to him.”
Isa
57:15 The
high and lofty one who inhabits eternity, the Holy One, says this: "I live
in that high and holy place with those whose spirits are contrite and humble. I
refresh the humble and give new courage to those with repentant hearts.
3) You can come to the CHRIST of Christmas if you need
healing and forgiveness
Isa
53:4-6 It was our weaknesses he carried; it was our
sorrows that weighed him down. And we thought his troubles were a punishment
from God for his own sins! But he was wounded and crushed for our sins. He was
beaten that we might have peace. He was whipped, and we were healed! 6 All of
us have strayed away like sheep. We have left God's paths to follow our own.
Yet the LORD laid on him the guilt and sins of us all.
Isa
55:6-7 Seek
the LORD while you can find him. Call on him now while he is near. Let the
people turn from their wicked deeds. Let them banish from their minds the very
thought of doing wrong! Let them turn to the LORD that he may have mercy on
them. Yes, turn to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.
Luke
7:47-48 (Jesus
said) “I tell you, her sins--and they are many--have been forgiven, so she has
shown me much love. But a person who is forgiven little shows only little
love." Then Jesus said to the woman, "Your sins are forgiven."
Ps
32:5 Finally, I confessed all my sins to you and
stopped trying to hide them. I said to
myself, "I will confess my rebellion to the LORD." And you forgave me! All my guilt is gone.
4) You can come to the CHRIST of Christmas if you need joy and peace
Isa
55:12-13 You will live in joy
and peace. The mountains and hills will burst into song, and the trees of the field
will clap their hands! Where once there were thorns, cypress trees will grow.
Where briers grew, myrtles will sprout up. This miracle will bring great honor
to the LORD's name; it will be an everlasting sign of his power and love.
Heb
4:7 "Today, if you hear his voice, do not
harden your hearts."
