Living for an Audience of One

From congregational readings in Genesis 6-10, Jan 20, 2008 – bk@kluth.org

Gen 6:5-9 The LORD saw how great man's wickedness on the earth had become, and that every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil all the time. The LORD was grieved that he had made man on the earth, and his heart was filled with pain. So the LORD said, "I will wipe mankind, whom I have created, from the face of the earth--men and animals, and creatures that move along the ground, and birds of the air--for I am grieved that I have made them." But Noah found favor in the eyes of the LORD.    This is the account of Noah.  Noah was a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time, and he walked with God.

Ex 23:2 Do not follow the crowd in doing wrong.

1 - Be righteous

Rom 3:21-25 God has shown us a different way of being right (=righteous) in his sight--not by obeying the law but by the way promised in the Scriptures long ago.  We are made right in God's sight when we trust in Jesus Christ to take away our sins. And we all can be saved in this same way, no matter who we are or what we have done.  For all have sinned; all fall short of God's glorious standard. Yet now God in his gracious kindness declares us not guilty. He has done this through Christ Jesus, who has freed us by taking away our sins. For God sent Jesus to take the punishment for our sins and to satisfy God's anger against us. We are made right with God when we believe that Jesus shed his blood, sacrificing his life for us.NLT

Isa 61:10 I delight greatly in the LORD; my soul rejoices in my God. For he has clothed me with garments of salvation and arrayed me in a robe of righteousness.

Rom 13:14 Clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the sinful nature.

2 - Be blameless

2 Peter 3:14 Dear friends, since you are looking forward to [heaven], make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with [Christ].

1 Thess 5:22-24 Keep away from every kind of evil. May the God of peace himself make you entirely pure and devoted to God; and may your spirit and soul and body be kept strong and blameless until that day when our Lord Jesus Christ comes back again. God, who called you to become his child, will do all this for you, just as he promised.TLB

Titus 1:6 An elder must be blameless, the husband of but one wifeÉ

3 - Be obedient

Gen 6:9 NoahÉwalked with God.

Gen 6:14-15 (The LORD said to Noah) Make yourself an ark of cypress wood; make rooms in it and coat it with pitch inside and out. This is how you are to build it: The ark is to be 450 feet long, 75 feet wide and 45 feet high.

Gen 6:22, 7:5, 7:9, 7:16 Noah did everything just as God commanded him.

Luke 6:46  (Jesus said) "Why do you call me, 'Lord, Lord,' and do not do what I say?Ó

John 14:21 (Jesus said) ÒWhoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me. He who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love him and show myself to him."

1 Peter 1:14 As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance.

Matt 25:23 His master replied, 'Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master's happiness!'
