Sex in the Bible

1 - Sex is God’s idea and is to be part of marriage

Gen 4:1 Adam lay with his wife Eve, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Cain. Gen 24:67 Isaac brought [Rebekah] into the tent of his mother Sarah, and he married Rebekah. So she became his wife, and he loved her; and Isaac was comforted after his mother's death.

Gen 35:10-11 God said to [Jacob], "I am God Almighty; be fruitful and increase in number. A nation and a community of nations will come from you, and kings will come from your body.

Heb 13:4 Honor your marriage and its vows, and be pure; for God will surely punish all those who are immoral or commit adultery.^TLB

2 - Sex in dating and date rape leads to trouble

Gen 34:1-4 Now Dinah, the daughter Leah had borne to Jacob, went out to visit the women of the land. When Shechem son of Hamor the Hivite, the ruler of that area, saw her, he took her and violated her. His heart was drawn to Dinah daughter of Jacob, and he loved the girl and spoke tenderly to her. And Shechem said to his father Hamor, "Get me this girl as my wife."

2 Sam 13:3-5, 9-16 Amnon had a friend named Jonadab…a very shrewd man. He asked Amnon, "Why do you, the king's son, look so haggard morning after morning? Won't you tell me?" Amnon said to him, "I'm in love with Tamar, my brother Absalom's sister." "Go to bed and pretend to be ill," Jonadab said…"Send everyone out of here," Amnon said. So everyone left him. Then Amnon said to Tamar, "Bring the food here into my bedroom so I may eat from your hand." And Tamar took the bread she had prepared and brought it to her brother Amnon in his bedroom. But when she took it to him to eat, he grabbed her and said, "Come to bed with me, my sister." "Don't, my brother!" she said to him. "Don't force me. Such a thing should not be done in Israel! Don't do this wicked thing…But he refused to listen to her, and since he was stronger than she, he raped her. Then Amnon hated her with intense hatred. In fact, he hated her more than he had loved her. Amnon said to her, "Get up and get out!" "No!" she said to him. "Sending me away would be a greater wrong than what you have already done to me." But he refused to listen to her.

1 Th 4:3-4 God wants you to be holy, so you should keep clear of all sexual sin. Then each of you will control your body and live in holiness and honor.

3 - Sex is to be mutually satisfying and God honoring

1 Cor 7:3-5 The husband should not deprive his wife of sexual intimacy, which is her right as a married woman, nor should the wife deprive her husband. The wife gives authority over her body to her husband, and the husband also gives authority over his body to his wife. So do not deprive each other of sexual relations.^NLT

Gen 38:9 Whenever [Onan} lay with his [deceased] brother's wife, he spilled his semen on the ground to keep from producing offspring…

Gen 35:22 While Israel was living in that region, Reuben went in and slept with his father's concubine Bilhah, and Israel heard of it.

Lev 18:8 "'Do not have sexual relations with (22 categories of people).”

4 - Sex outside of marriage is wrong in God’s sight

Gen 39:6-10 Now Joseph was well-built and handsome, and after a while his master's wife took notice of Joseph and said, "Come to bed with me!" But he refused (and told her), “How then could I do such a wicked thing and sin against God?" And though she spoke to Joseph day after day, he refused to go to bed with her or even be with her.

Gen 38:12,15-19 Judah's wife, the daughter of Shua, died. When Judah had recovered from his grief, he went up to Timnah…Judah saw [his disguised daughter-in-law] he thought she was a prostitute, for she had covered her face. Not realizing that she was his daughter-in-law, he went over to her by the roadside and said, "Come now, let me sleep with you."…So he…slept with her, and she became pregnant by him.

1 Cor 6:9-11 Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders…will inherit the kingdom of God. And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.
